What is coal and how is it formed?

Answer:

DEFINITION OF COAL.

Coal is a hard black substance that is excavated from the Earth, a large piece of something without difinite shape and used as fuel.

-a black rock formed from a prehistoric plant remains composed of carbon and burned as a fuel.

The most important uses of coals are Steel Production, Cement Manufacturing, Liquid Fuel, and Electricity Generation. Coal is also known as thermal coal use in power generation.

There are 4 Stages of Coal Formation:

A. PEAT - 1st Stage

Vegetable matter is oxidized to water and carbon dioxide. The oxygen is not present if the plant material is compile under water, only partial decay will occur. This is brown and very soft. Composed of 60% organic matter, also contains a lot of water that limit its heat content or the amount of the energy peat contains. It is seldom used as a source of heat.

B. Lignite - 2nd Stage

Formed when Peat is subjected to made greater amount vertical pressure from accumulating sediments. This is also a Soft Brown Coal and has a high amount of water. Campared to Peat it has a higher heat content but still not coveted form of coal.

C. Bituminous - 3rd Stage

Added pressure has made Bituminous condensed and almost all traces of plant life have vanished. This is frequently classified as Bituminous or Sub-Bituminous.

- Bituminous - the usual type of coal used in U. S and also known as soft coal.

- Sub-Bituminous - a transition stage from Lignite to Bituminous.

D. Anthracite - 4th Stage

Appeared to have been formed as a result of combination of pressure and high temperature, burned with a little smoke and short flame. This a highest grade coal metamorphic rock. A hard dark black coal. Compared to other types of coal, it is a light weighted coal because it has a very little water. It has the highest heat content. 11.22.1.9
